Darwin Group is backing the call for increased investment into GP practices after a recent campaign highlighted the immense pressure the services are under.

England GPs: Treating 90% of NHS patient contacts for under 10% of national budget

Recent polling by the Rebuild of General Practice campaign found that half of health professionals surveyed believed GP surgeries should be seen as the number one priority for investment.

This is also backed by 52% of people within the UK who believe general practice should be prioritised over any other service.

Dr Mohit Mandiratta, a GP from the Feldon Practice in the West Midlands said: “GPs in England currently treat around 90% of NHS patient contacts for under 10% of the national budget. This fraction of the budget is only decreasing.

“The system is at breaking point. We need to do better. We need to make primary care better for everyone as it is the bedrock of the NHS. Patients deserve a proper general practice service, which prioritises their needs.”

The Rebuild of General Practice national campaign is funded by the British Medical Association (BMA) and the General Practitioners Defence Fund (GPDF) to press for reforms to encourage GP retention, increase resources and provide more autonomy to GPs.

Launched in March 2022, the campaign has been highlighting immediate issues in a bid to keep patients safe in the heart of the community.

32.49 million appointments delivered by GPs in January 2024

Demand for GP services within the community is growing. The Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with an ageing population, contributed to an increase of 5 million more appointments delivered by GPs compared to January 2019.

As a cornerstone of the NHS, there is a significant focus on general practice in preparation for the General Election, including a call for more investment to enable patients to be seen in their communities, preventing hospital visits. It’s also recognised that GPs need the space and resources to accommodate expanding teams and increasing demand.
