JAMES PAGET ORTHOPAEDIC ELECTIVE CENTRE

Ultraclean operating theatre at James Paget

The challenge

James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) is a vibrant university hospital providing the best possible care to a population of 250,000 residents across Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Waveney, as well as to the many visitors who come to this part of East Anglia.

Several critical factors drove the development of the James Paget Orthopaedic Centre (JPOC) and Oulton Suite. The local population is ageing and therefore requiring more orthopaedic interventions, current infrastructure was insufficient to meet needs, winter surges were exacerbating waiting times and there was a need for dedicated facilities for elective procedures to free up emergency surgery capacity.

Our solution

The JPOC and Oulton Suite are a transformative step for healthcare delivery at the JPUH in Gorleston, Norfolk.
Operating seven days a week, 50 weeks a year, it will provide a planned 1,400 extra theatre sessions annually and enough capacity for not only the hospital’s annual planned orthopaedic operations but also additional cases from across the Norfolk and Waveney healthcare system. This extra capacity should allow for the treatment of more than 3,000 additional patients – more than the current orthopaedic elective capacity.

This two-storey Hub consists of two operating theatres, a post-surgery recovery area and four patient bays as well as staff facilities on the ground floor. On the first floor, there are a number of treatment and consultation rooms which will offer a range of diagnostic services.

These new facilities mean that surgery can continue even at times of peak demand, such as during the winter months, when traditionally elective procedures have been postponed freeing up beds for patients requiring emergency care.

Additionally, the modern, roomy and light design of the facility prioritises patient comfort and recovery. Features such as spacious waiting areas, patient lounges, and recovery zones promote a positive experience, reducing anxiety and enhancing outcomes.
